Doc’s 2 cents
I am on my 15th day and I just gained back 5 pounds. So the 15 is now 10. How should I go back down? Should I do induction for a couple more days? Is it me or maybe, like you said I am not eating enough. I do eat breakfast late, a small lunch and a small supper. Then I crave again 2 hours later. I allow myself some sugar free jello with whipped cream in the evening. I also use 1/2 and 1/2 for my decaf coffee. Should I use whipping cream?

Monica,
Thanks for your tips. They make a lot of sense. I’m going to save your email
and refer back to it.
Hi, everyone! I’m new to the list. I’ve been doing Atkins since January 2 of
this year and have lost about 31 pounds. More importantly, I’ve lost inches
and have gone from snug size 16 jeans to normal fitting size 8s. I still have
a lot of weight to lose, but I no longer feel like the fat chick walking down
the street. Anyway, I have a question that I haven’t been able to find the
answer to. I finally bought the psyllium husks the Atkins book recommends,
and I have a question: what is the difference between dietary fiber and
soluble fiber? The jar of husks lists both. I was under the impression that
fiber is indigestible and wouldn’t contribute to the daily carb count, but I
don’t want to miss counting any hidden carbs if the husks contain them.
Thanks for any help.

Monica -
Thanks so much for your insight. It’s always nice to have things put so plainly for us to think about. I am the world’s worst at skipping breakfast - no a morning person, therefore it’s an hour before I even feel awake! LOL I will try to keep this tip in mind though and start trying to eat something earlier than I normally do. Have a great day!

Wow, am I the only one who is losing practically no weight on the Atkins diet? I started at 154 lbs on Feb. 1, bounced around between 153 and 152 for awhile, got down to 150 a week ago, and edged back up to 151 within a few days. My punishment for Saturday night’s 68 grams of carbs was a weigh-in of 152 this morning.
I’m still following induction. Even counting Saturday’s carb blowout, my average for the last month was 21 grams a day, and the daily average for 10 weeks is 18.
I can’t believe the citric acid in a 12-ounce glass of diet tonic water is solely to blame. What else can I be doing wrong? I don’t have any food allergies that I know of.

give me an example of what you eat and when for about 3 days.

this is what i originally wrote….
1. you body needs .5 grams of protein per pound of body weight to maintain your lean body weight (muscle and bones) FOR EXAMPLE: if you weight 250, that would ….
you will notice i said you need .5 grams to MAINTAIN your lean body weight. i never said this was enough protein if you were trying to build lean body mass. in fact, at the end of my original post i wrote….
you know, everyone is different. if you have an allergy to a food, it will stall you. if you weight train, you will need more protein and more carbs….
so, i agree with you that more protein and more carbs are needed if you weight train, as i said before.
now, on the matter of protein breaking down to glucose, we are speaking of 2 different things. i was speaking of dietary protein. what you eat breaks down 56% to glucose. you are talking about a person’s lean body mass breaking down, correct?
if i missed it, let me know.

I agree with what monica said to an extent. I do agree that You
should eat 10 to 12 times your weight in calories and adjust
accordingly as weightloss occurs but I think that 20% protein is too
low, at least for those who are interested in building muscle
while still losing fat. Actually, all substances are broken down
into glucose, glycerol and fatty
acids (fats) and amino acids (for simplicity’s sake) but fats and
protein CAN
be converted to glucose if needed. The body’s first need is for
energy to
run itself and that only comes from glucose. In a starvation
scenario, the
first substance used for energy is glucose. When that runs out,
carbohydrate
stores (starch) is broken down to glucose. Then when that runs out,
fats are
converted to glucose. When fat runs out the body begins to break down
protein in a process known as gluconeogenesis. When 1/3 (I’m not
sure of the
exact amount) of the body’s protein is gone, death follows
shortly,so while going too low on the fats can cause the body
to convert protein into glucose as a survival mechanism, this will
only occur in the event that the body has run out of fat
stores, which would be rare on this diet. I think one would be
fine upping the amount of protein one is consuming as long as
it remains a lower percentage than one’s daily consumption of fat.
