Doc’s 2 cents
hello. i have been out of town so this question may have already been addressed, but i thought i would toss in my 2 cents worth.
just a little on me so that you will know my background. i have a BS degree in Human Anatomy, am currently working on a Masters degree in Nutrition, and I have a Doctorate in Chiropractic. i have studied and researched low carb eating for the last 5 years. I have read Atkins, Protein Power, Nederthin, all of the Zone books, Sugarbusters, The Ketogenic Diet, The Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet, and the 99% Solution. I have also taught a nutrition class on low carb living at my clinic. i also have 200# to lose. just because i can teach this, doesn’t mean i can make myself do it. i attend Overeaters Anomyous and am making progess on my binge eating.
So, that having been said, here is my opinion for anyone that wants it. Everyone else feel free to hit the delete button..
1. you body needs .5 grams of protein per pound of body weight to maintain your lean body weight (muscle and bones) FOR EXAMPLE: if you weight 250, that would mean you need 250 x .5 = 125 grams of protein. protein has 4 calories per gram, so that would be 500 calories a day from protein
2. if you stick to the 20 grams of carbs, which each have 4 calories per gram, then the same 250# person would be receiving 80 calories a day from carbs.
3. what seems to work best for most folks on this way of eating for weight loss, is to consume 10 to 12 times their current weight in calories. so, my example of a 250# person would need to consume 2500 to 3000 calories a day.
4. so, let’s put it all together and see where we are in fat requirements. i personally recommend shooting for approximately 78% fat. for my example, that would be 2500 calories x 78% = 1950 calories from fat, which would be approx 217 grams of fat.
5. does it all ad up? let’s see.. here are the numbers i came up with for my imagnery 250# person x 10 = 2500 calories
20 grams of carb = 80 calories 3%
` 125 grams of protein = 500 calories 20%
216 grams of fat = 1950 calories 77%
