Dear Newbie,
There is an excellent website that you can go to to print out a grocery list that you could hang on the frig or carry with you.
go to, www.lowcarbeating.com
register, and then go to the Beginners Guide. Loads of great information on this website.

A couple of questions, if you don’t mind: First, how much do you have to eat in the morning to get the metabolism going? My usual routine is to go for a walk for about an hour immediately upon rising. I eat breakfast with my husband when I get back. Would a half-ounce of nuts be enough or do I have to re-arrainge the routine entirely?
I think if you will grab anything legal before you walk, that should do the trick. And you are right, a small amout will start the engine if you follow up with breakfast after the walk. By all means, don’t stop walking. Walking increases the metabolism as well, so if you will eat a bit first, followed by a walk, your metabolism stays high longer than without the exercise.

Also, how useful is the ketone test with the urine strips? I “fell off the wagon” for the first time last night — had a half a dinner roll, about eight french fries, and a third of a Tartufo (oh, bliss). That gave me a carb intake for the day of 68. The ketone strip still showed ketone loss, but at the “small” level, rather than “large.” Blood glucose two hours after dinner was 202, however, which is a little alarming. It was 101 this morning (I have not been diagnosed as diabetic, although the family history is strong).

ketone testing is very useful. it told you that you did something different, by dropping down to the small level, but that you were still burning fat as your primary source of fuel. the only way you will have ketone bodies in your urine is if you are breaking down stored fat. your 101 glucose level this morning should be plenty of incentive to keep you on the straight and narrow again for sometime to come. is your hubby eating dinner rolls and french fries? I’m not sure what a Tartufo is, but is sounds good.
Thanks again for your post. It was very helpful.

you are most welcome!

eating first thing in AM

Tuesday, January 28th, 2003

Dee, it’s hard for me to eat first thing as well. I usually try and grab some cheese and eat it before my shower, then eat eggs afterwards when i’m more awake.
sometimes i have an atkins bar with coffee. i probably do this most often, just because for me, it is the easiest, and i really like the praline and cream bar with coffee.

Getting in the Fat

Monday, January 27th, 2003

Mayo on everything. another is cook your veggies in good old bacon fat. and finally, cream cheese, blue cheese, feta cheese, ricotta cheese, parmesan, romano.
i eat dark meat chicken instead of white, always with the skin when baking, broiling or frying. have any of your tried fried chicken? it doesn’t need batter. season the skin, and fry as normal, just use peanut oil. you will think you have died and gone to heaven.
While i was out of town this weekend, I went to Whole Foods Market in Dallas and picked up some flax seed. Flax seed is a super healthy way to get the fat into your diet. I have not tried it yet, but will be adding flax seed into my salads, and anything i can add it too. they are an excellent source of fiber, omega fatty acids, and iron. anyone here use flax seed?

DEBRA

if you are hungry on this diet, you are doing one of two things, you are not eating enough, or you are not eating enough of the right things. tomorrow, write down everything you eat, and if you can remember write down sunday, and sat too, and send them, along with approx times you ate. that’s the only way to see what is going on with you.

Newbie here

Monday, January 27th, 2003

Well just joined the group and hoping this works.
I have decided to try this diet after watching a friend do it and
seeing it work great for her.
So tomorrow morning I start.
Is there anything that I should know starting off?
I was wondering if there was a list (besides the book) that I could
copy to put on the fridge with the list of things that I can eat and
can not eat. Carrying around the book is hard to do all the time?
As a quick question that I did not really see in the book, but might
have missed it, I take a multi-vititam and extra calcium, should I
be taking anything else?
I know that there is a multi that you can get thru his website and
did not know if that was better.
Also is there anyone in the San Francisco area on here that might be
a support system close by or a mentor……
Sorry so many questions….
Just a little scared….

Nutrition Software

Monday, January 27th, 2003

This question was posed to me privately, but my reply keeps bouncing from the questioner’s e-mail address. So I’m posting it again here. Apologies for any inconvenience to the list.

Cass,

Can you tell me where you found the nutrition software and if it’s a retail product available for download online?

Doc’s 2 cents

Sunday, January 26th, 2003

I am on my 15th day and I just gained back 5 pounds. So the 15 is now 10. How should I go back down? Should I do induction for a couple more days? Is it me or maybe, like you said I am not eating enough. I do eat breakfast late, a small lunch and a small supper. Then I crave again 2 hours later. I allow myself some sugar free jello with whipped cream in the evening. I also use 1/2 and 1/2 for my decaf coffee. Should I use whipping cream?

Doc’s 2 cents

Sunday, January 26th, 2003

hello. i have been out of town so this question may have already been addressed, but i thought i would toss in my 2 cents worth.
just a little on me so that you will know my background. i have a BS degree in Human Anatomy, am currently working on a Masters degree in Nutrition, and I have a Doctorate in Chiropractic. i have studied and researched low carb eating for the last 5 years. I have read Atkins, Protein Power, Nederthin, all of the Zone books, Sugarbusters, The Ketogenic Diet, The Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet, and the 99% Solution. I have also taught a nutrition class on low carb living at my clinic. i also have 200# to lose. just because i can teach this, doesn’t mean i can make myself do it. i attend Overeaters Anomyous and am making progess on my binge eating.
So, that having been said, here is my opinion for anyone that wants it. Everyone else feel free to hit the delete button.. :-) 1. you body needs .5 grams of protein per pound of body weight to maintain your lean body weight (muscle and bones) FOR EXAMPLE: if you weight 250, that would mean you need 250 x .5 = 125 grams of protein. protein has 4 calories per gram, so that would be 500 calories a day from protein
2. if you stick to the 20 grams of carbs, which each have 4 calories per gram, then the same 250# person would be receiving 80 calories a day from carbs.
3. what seems to work best for most folks on this way of eating for weight loss, is to consume 10 to 12 times their current weight in calories. so, my example of a 250# person would need to consume 2500 to 3000 calories a day.
4. so, let’s put it all together and see where we are in fat requirements. i personally recommend shooting for approximately 78% fat. for my example, that would be 2500 calories x 78% = 1950 calories from fat, which would be approx 217 grams of fat.
5. does it all ad up? let’s see.. here are the numbers i came up with for my imagnery 250# person x 10 = 2500 calories
20 grams of carb = 80 calories 3%
` 125 grams of protein = 500 calories 20%
216 grams of fat = 1950 calories 77%
