New list member..

Friday, February 28th, 2003

Hello group,
While I am a newbie to the list, I have just completed my 3rd week
of the induction diet - checking my ketone level this morning shows
I’m in heavy ketosis.. Yeah, I know, generally you stay on it for a
couple of weeks, but I have enjoyed it so much, it has been easy to
stay on it.. Well that is except for no bread.. Being I never really
had that much of a sweet tooth, I don’t miss the sweets, but the
bread had been a tough give up.. Living near a German Bakery, one at
which we used to eat, and very often bought bread from, does not make
life any easier..
It’s really ironic given when my buddy who first described the
diet to me, told me of his brothers success with the diet, but would
occasionally go off of the diet and consume a whole loaf of bread..
The ironic part is I remember at the time, thinking how compulsive
that was, and who could eat a whole loaf of bread.. Well I now know I
could murder a loaf myself..
But I’ve made it three weeks without any bread, so I guess I will
not die.. Yeah, I know there is low carb bread, in fact my wife even
picked me up a loaf this weekend, but then forgot it and left it at
her parents house.. Is that low carb bread any good anyway??
I have a propensity for diabetes (both my father, grand father had
it) so this was my main reason for going on Atkins, and have no plans
to ever go back to a higher card diet.. Sure the weight loss is nice,
and I am happy for every pound I shed (so far it’s been around 15
lbs), but that is just the butter on the bread so to speak - I gotta
stop thinking about bread..
Anyway, I go in on Friday for my anual blood work up, and hope the
results doesn’t give my doctor any causes for concern.. Wish me luck..

You are NOT kidding. I am about to go NUTS without my COKE. Diet Dr. Pepper is a big help. Tried the Diet Rite sodas…..just didn’t care for them. So I am just hoping that the aspartame doesn’t hurt me….we will see.

back on induction!

Thursday, February 27th, 2003

I’m giving it another try!! The last time I tried (about a month ago) I had
to give it up because I got in such a bad mood after two weeks!!! I did
lose weight & was quite satisfied.
I have about another 20 pounds to lose so I am starting induction again
today (I’m also an oldie - 63-yr old female) but I’m normally in a good
mood!!!! It was nice to read from all of you out there (we should form a
motivational group of oldies)!!!
Regards to all, young & old!!!
P.S. I might not be in such a jolly good mood in another 2 weeks!!

cheating

Thursday, February 27th, 2003

I can’t believe I cheated today. I ate cool whip with my sugar free jello
and had a shot of whiskey. What a Sunday backslide! Does this mean I am
starting over? It wasn’t beer, wine or bread! I didn’t eat ice cream or
cookies! Am I going to be okay?

And another thing for us oldies: just exactly what sort of exercise are
you supposed to do if your knees are so bad that some days it is hard to get
from one end of the house to the other?

Shirley -
I am not 60 yet (38 actually) but have a spinal cord injury which has resulted in me using a wheel chair. I have found that you can raise your heart rate and exercise numerous muscle group in a sitting position. Use your arms! Lift your legs! Draw circles in the air! Any movement is better than none!

Digest Number 56

You may not experience any side effects from aspertame. I don’t. And you
say you’re still in ketosis. Until they find something better or until
Jello starts using Splenda, it’s still my main-stay for dessert. As for the
nitrates in bacon; I’m sure a loaded amount can cause cancer, but I’m in the
best health I’ve been in for years and I eat my share of bacon. They said
the same thing about saccharin years ago and took it off the market after
feeding test mice an dosage so large, that no human could possibly ingest
that amount in a lifetime.
A little common sense goes a long way………

You are so right!!!!! I looked on the box tonight. UGH!
I guess my cheatter snack is going to go ;(.
Sorry for the false information. However, I can say that I have still been
in Ketiosis and it has not affected my weight loss. Nevertheless, I do not
want to experience any of the bad side effects.

Another Newby

Wednesday, February 26th, 2003

I have seen SO many successes on the Atkins Plan, and I have tried it
before, BUT always lose to my uncontrollable needs to eat bread.
This time I am more determined. I have researched bread substitues,
and just bough the Atkins Bread Mix and I’ll try making the muffins
this A.M.
Any other ideas —- need any and all ideas to control this urge!!!
Thanks for all your help.
