Eating Salads out a problem?

Saturday, March 29th, 2003

Margie,
I would suppose the it’s the salad dressing you have to watch out for. If
you ask for oil and vinegar on the side, the salad become low carb. Of
course if you find high-carb veggies in it, just don’t eat them. Grated
Parmesan or Romano cheese on your salad is very permissable and adds taste
to the oil & vinegar.
The bottom line is you have to be aware of what it is you are allowed and
what is not allowed. I keep a list of permissable foods in my handbag. I
made it on the PC at 8pt pitch and then cut it down and folded it so it
takes up very little room. I’ve ordered antipast in Italian restaurants if
there was nothing else on the menu that I could eat.

heartburn

Friday, March 28th, 2003

Kathryn:

I had the very same problem — last week was horrible with stomach pain & fatigue — I am also on medication.

This diet seems to cause a lot of acidity. I had to ease off as I was in such pain. I found that eating celery through the day helped a bit in controlling the acidity. I had to add more veggies but this does not help, as then I get CARB HUNGRY!!!

Maggie

I ended up with this yesterday

Friday, March 28th, 2003

1 string cheese with my medicine

2 scrambled eggs in bacon grease, 2 slices of bacon and 1 oz of Sharp Cheddar

hamburger (no bun), half piece bacon, a piece of leaf lettuce, some garlic mustard, 1/4 cup sauted zucchinni, and pork rinds (I wanted that crunch factor)

I didn’t have my salad made up by dinner since I had gone to the grocery store late so I think I missed out on my veggies yesterday but I have a huge bowl made up now so it is ready to grab and go :) I am not too fond of carrots anyway so I left them out but I sure do love tomatoes and they will soon be in abundance. What is the carb count on them? Where is a good place to get counts for some of the fresh foods that have no labels.

I appreciated the other food journal posted yesterday too. It gives me some ideas.

Oh yeah, I read the label on SF Jell-O last night and it has aspartme in it so which brand or kind doesn’t? I think that would make a great treat and I saw it on some of the menu’s at the Atkins site.

Thanks,

Karyn

Mayo and ranch dressing questions

Thursday, March 27th, 2003

Hi,
Need some feedback here…any advice/knowledge would sure be
appreciated…..
Day 4 here. I have been skimming all through the new book and it
doesn’t say how much mayo or ranch dressing is allowed. It goes
against my low cal, low fat brain to put on more than a teardrop size
of these fats!
I got the gastric band because I was so out of control that I
couldn’t restrict my portions and have lost 40 lbs in 10 months. 700-
900 calories per day and didn’t realize until I read Atkins book that
much of the food that I was eating were CARBS!!!!
So that, combined with low fat etc, no wonder I have had a tough time
of it and several plateaus to contend with.
But, because of this restriction of my stoma, the protein has to be
ground up and either be injested as a soup or with tons o’
mayo/dressing….mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm … yummy…but I don’t think
that I should be eating as much fat as I am…
For example: I had 4 tablespoons of mayo to make my various tuna, egg
salads..and just the fat in that was 400 calories….and lots of
ranch dressing…about 250 cals worth…..
Not going over 1500 cals per day or 20 carbs for day…..Daily carbs
are more like under 15 or so but the fat is up there baby!!!!
Any suggestions would help..
Thanks,
Junzie

Question about Sugar Alcohols

Thursday, March 27th, 2003

I started the induction phase 2 days ago.
It’s going great except for a major craving for
sweets.
I found these Chocolate bars at GNC which claims to
have zero sugar carbs. They are made by a company
called carbolite foods, INC. They have splenda in
them and they taste great. My concern is the sugar
alcolols they contain.
The package says:
Total carbs 20.0g
-Fiber 1.0g
-Sugar 0.0g
-Sugar Alcohols 19.0g
Net effective Carbs 0.0g
(Includes only those carbs that causes a noted effect
on blood sugar.)
Any comments.

second day, many questions!

Wednesday, March 26th, 2003

O.K. We have been doing the induction program for 2 days now, (Wife &
I.) and I think we can do it. but there are a few questions we have.
One is about sweeteners, the “new” Atkins diet book, says that
saccharin & sucralose (Splenda) are the only sweeteners you can use.
Not aspartame. The Dr Atkins “NEW” diet cookbook says: Saccharin and
aspartame, acesulfame-K, are OK but that sweeteners such as sorbitol,
mannitol and other hexitols are NOT allowed, nor are any sweeteners
ending in the letters “OSE” like maltose, fructose, etc. Does that
include Sucralose? I am so confused… LOL! Now another question, I
like a little crunch with my salad, instead of crutons, can I use
pork rinds? No carbs and they are meat…. sort of. Last question,
for today at least, are there any deserts, like the sugarfree jellows
you can eat while in the induction phase? I work alot of nights and
during the summer many 16 hour shifts because of vacations, ( I work
in a boiler room at a LARGE prison and my wife can’t always make my
meals, and many time I just get home from work, sleep and go back to
work, so I need quick and easy, & low carb, any suggestions? We do
have both cookbooks, the diet revolution book and the little carb
counter book, and we are going to make things to freeze ahead when we
get done with the induction phase, but for now we miss the fast and
easy of sandwhiches, and frozen foods. sorry for the long post, but
it’s my last for today. TTFN. Ed

yummy dinner

Wednesday, March 26th, 2003

Tonight I grilled burgers seasoned with Emeril’s Essense (no carbs) and they were fabulous. I topped mine with a slice of provolone cheese (less than 1 carb) . I enjoyed the flavor the seasoning added. In the past I’ve always liked onion soup mix added to them.

What is everyone else eating?
