Ketosis makes you stupid?
I got Ketostix at Cosco, 100 for $13. Walgreen wanted $15 for 50.
And I am in total ketosis, higher than which it does not go, but what I want to know is, does anybody else find they are getting stupid at about this point?
I seem unable to focus, kept locking my daughter into the car because I was confused about whether up or down was locked, nearly hit a cop car because I couldn’t remember who had stopped at the intersection first.
My husband seems to be stupid too.

In a sense it does. The brain feeds on carbs, so if it feels
deprived I guess it will slow down. Makes us feel likes grazing
animals, quite happy I suppose.lol/ingrid

Nothing in the body runs on carbs, it runs on glucose. Protein and fat can be converted to glucose if necessary. There have been some studies that suggest the body’s organs run better on ketones than on glucose. If you are having a brain fog when starting on Induction it is normal during the first few days. It takes up to three days for the body to go from burning glucose to burning ketones, and during those few days there can be a brain fog and fatigue that usually clears once the body switches gears.

But your body needs those complex carbs (glucose). In Dr, Atkins book “Atkins for life” he says in no way does he tell anyone to cut out carbs all together because we need them along with the fiber and vitamines that come in them.

Seems to be having that effect on me. Mentally fogged, messed up
short term memory, poor judgement, bad reflexes. Not good.
One of the reasons I’d really like some help over this hump is that
this sort of thing can be dangerous. I can avoid driving by having my
boyfriend ferry me around, but there are several snake cages in the
house that need tending to. The occupants are large and venomous and
require a professional level of skill to manage. I can’t delegate
this task to the boyfriend.
I can tell when my judgement or reflexes are impaired to the point
that it’s not safe for me to work snakes, and that means the cages
stay locked. For the last three days my judgement has definitely been
impaired. Naturally it’s the two hardest-to-handle snakes in the
house whose cages need a good going-over.
I really need to get past this shaky-sick-dizzy-stupid thing soon, as
it is quite likely to get me killed if I attempt to do my normal daily
chores under the influence. So far I’m on Day 3 with no letup in the
symptoms that started on Day 1. If I still can’t work the snakes
tonight I’ll have to call a friend in the same business over for
backup tomorrow. *sigh*
I’m not doing any driving either until this clears up. If you are in
the same condition and you don’t happen to have snakes in the house,
don’t assume you’re safe - there is no antivenom for an automobile
accident. LOL Please be careful!

Tanith,
Do you have Hypoglycemia by any chance? You sound like your having a low sugar reaction. If its that bad and your making me think that it is, try adding some more veggies to your diet to see if that helps. I have never heard of anyone getting that weak and shaky from Atkins and it shouldnt be happening.

I am living in India and have been doing Atkins for one week and have lost 7 lbs. However most of the discussion on this forum is not helpful as it is all related to western supermarkets and health foods that are not available here. Even the free carb counter located at http://www.freecarbohydratecounter.com/ does not post information on how many carbs are in things like:
Coconut water
Coconut meat
Soy beans Soy flour
Panner-made of milksomething like your cheese
Dhal - lentils
Tapioka Chips
Can someone help me to find information on these items?

Hi,
The brain doesn’t function as well on ketogene as it does on
glucogene (sugar) which it takes carbs to produce. For safety, I
would have a large portion of carbs in my meal, perhaps ten, an hour
before I opened a snake cage (which I wouldn’t in any condition,
LOL) and then quickly get the chore done. //rgds Ingrid

I expect so. One of the reasons I went on Atkins was that I was
experiencing some very unpleasant low blood sugar symptoms a few hours
after eating a particularly “bad” meal with sugars and carbs. That
suggested to me that I might be headed for Type II diabetes if I
didn’t wake up and get in better shape with healthier eating habits.
I had a very nice dinner today at a fancy French restaurant. Stuck to
the rules completely and didn’t feel a bit deprived. I started with a
seared foie gras appetizer (ate nothing but the foie, ignored the
bread and grapes in reduced port wine sauce), then had a baked tilapia
fish fillet in rich cream sauce with about 1/2 cup of diced eggplant
and peppers. Delicious but not quite filling enough, so I also
grabbed a romaine lettuce and spinach salad garnished with crumbled
real bacon, cheese and a few raw mushroom slices.
I also stocked up on a product called “Smart Water”, a no calorie
fruit flavored water with potassium and mineral supplements. Good
stuff. I feel better today, less sick and dizzy, but still have a
really dry mouth unless I’m constantly drinking.
Cheers,
Tanith
