efffective carbs?

Thursday, June 26th, 2003

I dont understand how to count the good carbs from the bad carbs.
Can anyone explain the differences, I just dont get it.
When I am counting carbs, what do I need to do to get the total of
carbs that are actually in the product.
Please help……………driving me nuts.

Thank you! Ya know.. it’s not that I HAD to be right.. it’s just annoying
that someone out there thinks she is the be all/end all of Atkins answers.
She might really be messing someone up who might just give up due to this..
Thanks again!!

Debbie, I think that’s a good idea, for so many reasons. My mother-in-law loved chocolate and stressed over it her whole life. Then she died much too soon, and I always wish she had eaten the chocolate. Too much deprivation is not consistent with adequate life quality.
I agree with that Christine. Thats so sad!!! I wish she would have had the chocolate too. See, we can be healthy and still enjoy the special moments in our lives as long as we have control over ourselves. We are eating low carb so we can enjoy our lives in a healthy way. I think its better to take just the very special holidays and allow ourselves to enjoy it so you dont stress about it. The day after, its right back down to business. Too many people are saying that they slipped and while they were slipping they figured they would eat this and that… No. That isnt how it works. If someone gets weak and eats something they shouldnt have, ok. But stop afterwards. Dont keep setting new start dates for days later. Then your just making excuses. We all slip and as long as your serious about what your doing you will reach your goal.

Thank you all for input on carblevel!

Tuesday, June 24th, 2003

Hi, just back from Midsummer’s festivities, next to Christmas the
biggest holiday here in Sweden. Barring the one glass of wine, I
managed to stick to my Atkins (NO marinated herring, NO small, fresh
potatoes boiled with dill, NO strawberries - BUT instead fillet of
beef, tasty sallads, panna cotta made from vanilla stick -
delicious!). I really appreciated your various inputs on carblevels -
(this being very new to me, so new that I still wonder if I’m off
my head every time I have devilled eggs and mayo in my
sallads, considering that the Swedish equivalent of the FDA has
pushed the anti-fat campaign to levels that Americans are nowhere
near - we even had posters saying that “Socialstyrelsen (FDA)
recommends eating 6-7 slices of bread a day”!!!!!). I thought that
the body NEEDED 20 carbs so I was trying to push myself, lol. Going
on the Atkins is like having a culture shock - I feel slightly
disoriented and my old references on what to eat and not are
seriously challenged. BUT; it’s the first time in many years that I
really ENJOY what I’m eating and I laugh with joy every time I go to
the store to shop for food//ingrid

Tenacity will do it. A friend of mine with a PhD in applied
psychology had a weight problem. I’d never heard of Atkins so I
pointed in the direction of Montignac and the glycemic index. He
lost 30lbs over five months AND he “cheated” every week-end - he had
two-three white rolls every sat&sun for breakfast, and had a glass
of wine or so, not to mention the marshmallows. BUT, he lost all of
that weight because he stuck to his diet Mon thru Fri. It doesn’t
matter if we fall of the wagon, it’s all about getting back on it
again. So I’m going for it, even though my weightloss is
slow. /ingrid

For Dr. Atkins to keep his patients healthy, he says we must have 20 carbs per day for induction. We need carbs to be healthy and 20 a day is enough to keep us in good health. I think if you go below that it would depend on each individual on how they felt. Some people may be at risk of getting weak and dizzy (low blood sugar especially of they are very active or have a fast metabolism) and if they stayed on a diet of lower then 20 carbs, it may not be good for them.
