Hi Barbara,
For an emergency I don’t think there’s any problem at all with using
baby shampoo. For regular bathing, I would suggest shampoo made especially
for dogs. Apparently the PH of their skin is different than that of humans
and human shampoo can cause dry, itchy skin.
For what it’s worth I have never bathed my dog (German shepherd) unless
she’s rolled in something gross. Ugh! A healthy dog maintains a clean,
healthy coat naturally. (I don’t know if this holds true with every single
breed of dog). My dog smells sweet and clean without a bit of “doggy” odor.
I know many people who don’t bathe their dogs. When a dog is bathed, its
skin hurries to re-establish the natural oils. Then it’s bathed again and
the body has to put out those oils again. It can be a vicious cycle as the
body may begin to overoil itself and so it needs bathing more often. In the
long run, it’s better for them to go without bathing. JMO :o)
Just curious — why is it a backyard breeder? Because the puppy threw
up in the car? Car sickness is not uncommon, backyard breeder or no.
