Hello all I’m going to join the new way of eating.

Tuesday, May 25th, 2004

Hello,
As of November 5th, I am starting a new way of eating and I am
looking forward to loseing weight and gaining energy and slowing down
my sugar diebeties which has stayed at boarderline for 2 years now. I
am reading the Doc. Atkins book now but have put the diet off for a
few more weeks because of gallbladder surgery that I just had August
22, I have had a slow recovery they had to do open surgery.
6 years ago I tried this diet and felt very sick the first week and
stopped I didn’t know that it was normal, my body was adjusting. Since
then I have had 2 of my Doctors suggest this diet as a way to lose
weight and control my sugar. I am looking forward to having the
support system of this group and great place to get answers to my
questions. I am going to continue to lurk until I start my new way of
eating and then I will start my post of my daily meals and how I’m
feeling and make sure I’m off to a right start.
Happy to be joining this Group

What am I doing wrong?

Monday, May 24th, 2004

Hi,
I’m at the end of my 2nd week of the induction phase and I’ve only
lost about 1 pound - total. I’ve read the books and I excercise
moderately for an hour every day. I’m eating a combination eggs,
bacon, hamburger, mayo (for egg salad), tuna, atkins brand meal
replacement bars/ shakes, spinach (for salad) w/ 2 net carb/12 g fat
dressing, and decaf green tea. That’s it - seriously. I’m only
getting between 9-17 net carbs a day. Of course, I don’t eat all of
the items listed everyday…
There are a couple of things that I think could be part of the
problem:
1. Not eating enough fat
2. Eating too much or too little (don’t think it is too much)
3. Not varying my food enough
4. My prescription medication. It is in the NSAID category, but I
have to take it everyday - forever.
However, I did lose a lot of weight on a vegetarian version of low
carb diet prior to starting the atkins program. The main difference
is that I didn’t eat meat. I was using MorningStar Farms Griller
Prime (vegetarian), which has 3 net carbs, egg whites (instead of
full fat eggs), and caffeinated green tea. I didn’t eat bacon or
real hamburger. I did this the week before I started induction and
lost 5.5 pounds. I actually had lost nearly 20 pounds using this
same approach earlier this year. I gained 10 pounds back, which is
why I’m starting over. I actually have 15 pounds to meet my goal
weight.
By the way, I’m not vegetarian, but my husband is… He is totally
supportive of my efforts, but I had gotten out of the habit of
eating meat. Could that be my problem?
If you have any advice for me, it would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Erin

Has anyone tried low carb ZOIC Protein Nutrition drink??? I’m
looking for some feedback. I found it online but you need to buy a
12 pack. Where can I find it in stores to try it? A friend in FL
recommended it to me– she said it is very good. I live in Boston.

6 days on induction

Monday, May 24th, 2004

i am new to this group and new to atkins. i am on day 6.
on induction are most of you following the menu in the book? i have found
that hard as i had to travel this week and couldn’t take some food with me. plus
some of the recipes i didnt understand such as for monday as a snack it said
a controlled carb strawberry shake….what is that?
i would appreciate any suggestions or support.
i have been going to subway and buying their chicken spinach salad and
putting oil and vinegar on it as salad dressing. is that ok? it comes with a
couple
of strips of chicken lots of spinach and egg.
i also noticed that several people stay on induction for over a month. what
does that mean exactly?? does that mean no carbs? how can u determine what
food has carbs in it? for example, dont tomatoes have carbs?
looking forward to being a member of your group.

Atkins Shake Mixes

Monday, May 24th, 2004

Are the Atkins shake mixes ok on induction? I seem to be having luck losing
weight with them. Can you have as many as you want in a day? Do you need to
keep the net carbs under or around 20?
How about the protein bars that claim to have 3-4 net effective carbs, are they
ok to use during induction?
Thanks for the help.

my homemade mayo recipe

Sunday, May 23rd, 2004

Hi ya’ll,
I have tried to post before, but they never came through for some
reason. I am on my second week of induction. Our 12 yodd is doing
the diet along with me, and our 13 yodd is mostly doing it.
I have made my own mayo for years using my food processor - mainly
because I don’t like all the chemicals in the purchased kind. The
only carbs in it are the eggs and the lemon juice, and since it makes
a tad over 1 pint, the carbs per tablespoon would be almost nothing.
Here is the recipe.
3 eggs
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon pepper (recipe actually calls for 1 tsp white pepper)
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
2 cups vegetable oil
Separate 2 of the eggs - dispose of the whites. Into the blender or
food processor, put the 2 eggs yolks plus the one whole egg. Blend
until good and frothy. Add the salt, pepper, and dry mustard.
Process for 15 seconds. Add the lemon juice. Process for 30
seconds. Begin to slowly add the vegetable oil while the blender or
food processor is running. As you add, it will start to get solid.
Once all your oil is added, I let my food processor run for about 15
more seconds to make sure it is all incorporated.
This makes a little more than a pint of mayo, and it is so good. You
can add herbs and spices for flavored mayo as you are added the salt,
etc. One of our favorites is to add dried dill weed - about 1/2
teaspoon or so.
Going back to lurkdom now.
God bless ya’ll,

in my first week

Sunday, May 23rd, 2004

Hi
I started the Induction this past Monday & have stuck with it totally
so far. I’m 48 and have lost serious weight twice in the past. The
last time was around 8 years ago. I have trouble keeping it off.
This time, my S.O. was starting the diet so I figured it would be a
good time for me too! Already feel more energy.
Question - how important is portion size? Last night I had 1-1/2
chicken breast, just browned them in a pan with some garlic & olive
oil, topped them with some Mozzerella cheese slices, then finally
some Salsa on the top. Tasted good, but is that too big a meal?
Anyway, wish me luck! I’ll need it!

ps- I posted this two days ago but it didnt show up so Im reposting.

Question about candy bar cars

Sunday, May 23rd, 2004

I bought some Ross Chocolate chocolate bars which were advertised
with 1 gram of carbs per bar. When I got the bars it says 15.8
grams of carbs, but that the “net impactible carbs” are 1.0 grams.
So how do I count this as far as grams go. I checked the Atkins
site and it says that you can eat these types of foods based on the
net carbs, but I was a little unclear on it. Can someone please
help me on this. Thanks.
Darin

I`m new here

Sunday, May 23rd, 2004

Hi there hows it going?
well my name is Sarah and i`m 22 also from Ont canada. On the
first of this month my husband and i and both going to go on the
Atkins for life diet! We have tried everything and in return have
only gained weight.. (go figure lol) we are both extreamly over
weight and need to make major changes in our lives. we have both
have had weight problems our whole lives and just never have been
able to get the pounds to stay off. I guess the reason i`m here is
to hear what other people have to say about this diet and to get
some info on all the stuff you can eat that it doesn`t say in the
book type thing. i hope that this can be a place where i can meet
great people and get to know alot more about this diet.
thanks for taking the time to read this :) Sarah
