flaxseed query
Hi all
I am new to Atkins and this group having not quite completed my induction
period, so far I have lost 4 pounds but I have a under active thyroid and am
on HRT so I don’t think I am doing too badly.
Earlier this year I had a full hysterectomy which thrust me into surgical
menopause since everything had to be removed and this in turn caused a
number of severe problems due to the sudden loss of hormones.
To combat this and the risks of strokes, heart attacks and osteoporosis I
was told I would have to take a replacement form of Estrogen long term. But
most forms of HRT do not agree with me and so, with the help of a
nutritionalist, I looked for other ways of replacing the estrogen and
reducing the risks so that I could drop the dose of the prescribed HRT to an
absolute minimum.
Sorry for the long winded run up to my query but I think it is necessary to
show where I am coming from.
Of all the natural products we looked at Flaxseed (also called Linseed in
the UK), because of its very high plant estrogen content, has been the most
effective means of reducing the worst of my symptoms. However the initial
dose of two tablespoons per day caused me to retain water to such an extent
that my feet became swollen with fluid and even one tablespoonful per day
led to water retention and weight gain so in the end I was forced to look
for a weaker alternative.
And here lies my question, in the Atkins book it clearly states that
Estrogen can inhibit any weight loss and yet I keep seeing recipes both
through this group and on low carb sites hailing the used of flaxseed in
doses higher than I was taking as a ultra low carb ingredient for breakfast.
I know it is 100% fibre so zero carbs but what about the estrogen content,
shouldn’t that be considered too??
I hope all of that makes sense
Best regards
Rita
