Question???
I started off at 244; on June 2 I was 232 and went on Atkins; I am now 185.
On a scale that does body fat by BMI, body fat is 22%. I don’t know if that
answers her questions, but it is the best I have to offer.

In a message dated 12/09/03 5:41:56 PM Eastern Standard Time,
i have one of those scales that supossedly gives you your body fat %,
according to my scale, when i weighed monday i was at 36.7 (i think) %.
at 240.5 and i am 5′8″
now i don’t know how accurate that is compared to the pinching way, i’m just
saying what the scale reads.
michele
264.5/240.5/150
24lbs and 20.5″ gone forever after 5 weeks on induction!

I had purchased the Tanita electronic scale about a year ago online. They
have several models and I opted for a more expensive one with more features.
One thing that concerns me about the BMI measurements it gives back… It
fluctuates a LOT from day to day.
IE: (from my 2nd week on Atkins Induction phase)
Date Weight BMI Weight Gain/Loss Fat
Gain/Loss
11/17/2003 194.4 28.6 -0.8 0.4
11/18/2003 192.8 28.8 -1.6 0.2
11/19/2003 194.2 26.4 1.4 -2.4
11/20/2003 193.6 27.1 -0.6 0.7
11/21/2003 193.6 25.6 0.0 -1.5
11/22/2003 192.4 26.4 -1.2 0.8
11/23/2003 192.2 25.8 -0.2 -0.6
The weight lost for that week was 2.2lbs yet the BMI was up and down by a
lot more than what could be accounted for by 2.2lbs. By the end of that
week the scale was saying I lost 3.2% of my body fat which would have been
roughly 6lbs (on 11/17 I would have been around 55.6lbs of fat and on
11/23/2003 I would have been around 49.6lbs of fat)… Yet the scale in
pounds only registered 2.2lbs of total weight loss.
The high fluctuations from day to day are unexplainable by me. Why it would
show I lost 2.4% of fat on 11/19 yet the LBS say I gained 2.6lbs? Then the
next day I gain .7% in BMI yet lose .6lbs?
All in all the BMI numbers (reported back by my scale) confuse me as to what
they may accurately reflect. I just note the numbers down in a daily
journal to try to analyze it and spot any patterns or trends that would help
them make more sense. All measurements are done first thing when I wake up
in the morning and after having (how to say) ‘discharged some bodily fluids’
(re: pee’d).
So all in all (and the reason for my response) I’ve taken the BMI number on
the scale as a not-very-scientifically-accurate reflection of what my scales
feels like showing on any given day. Maybe I have a bum scale and others
are working more accurately, but for me it just varies so drastically from
one day to another that its nearly impossible to really ascertain any
valuable information from its daily readings.
Has anyone else had these somewhat frustrating results with trying to track
their BMI using these electronic scales?

31% fat! (BMI 31). I feel much more like a whale! :-(( Like about 60%
fat! And in the shop windows I LOOK like one toooooboohoo!
But I am gyming my heart out, picked up another .5kg and losing inches, so
I’ll just carry on, hey?

David, what happens if you gym and exercise at the same time as losing.
Would you not retain your muscle then and just lose fat, although not move
the scale??
PLEASE say this is so, drat!, that’s what is happening to me, I think?

Hello Group!
I was just about to head to bed after a long night of working and I figured
I would quickly read some new emails before retiring. One really caught my
eye and made my night. Someone from this egroup was sweet enough to take
the time and write me a ‘direct’ email of support and applause for how I
handled a rather uncomfortable and unsightly email exchange on the group
earlier today. After replying back and thanking her for these kinds words,
I explained to her why I reacted the way I did and realized that instead of
just typing that to one person, I really should post it to the group since
the group had to deal with the exchange and may have been a bit put off by
how I handled it.
First off, if I offended anyone (besides the original poster), then I am
truly sorry. I admitted in a later email that I *reacted* due to the
specific negative and condescending wording that was used in the original
post of the ‘3rd parties’ comments about the Atkins plan. I found this
rather insulting, not only to me, but to the group in general. To further
add insult to injury, ‘proof’ was demanded from us and expected. This was
not a case of “Hey… how does this Atkins Way Of Eating work?” It was
written and posed in a way that was condescending and belittles us all for
our choice to follow the Atkins plan.
This egroup, to me, is our safe little haven away from the naysayers. It’s
a means for us to reach out to others.. to give and to get support… to
share information and ideas… to rejoice in our own and others achievements
every lost pound or kg along the way. It’s also a place were we come when
we feel vulnerable from weight stalls or pressures and urges to cheat and
need someone to say “HEY.. everything will be okay… stick with it”. Then
I read the post from what is supposed to be a fellow atkins’ite (is there
such a word?) who brought with her the negative and demeaning attitude of
her friend. Words are very powerful and can have a great effect on the
people reading them. Words like “I showed her the Atkins Fast Fat and she
laughed!” and ” “show me proof you are losing fat” and “show me the proof
from these “so-called-doctors”. In these three simple sentences the posters
‘friend’ managed to mock those who are doing the Fast Fat and posting about
it… demanding we prove to her we are not idiots… and then demands we
prove the so-called-doctors who advised us about Atkins were legitimate and
not lunatics. I found this insulting, and worse, I felt this was a
violation of the safe sanctuary this group had provided from such negativity
that we end up having to deal with enough in our ‘real lives’ at work or
with family members. So.. I reacted… and I’m still glad I did.
Let me ask you all something? How many of you choose to follow the Atkins
WOL just so you can prove to others that Atkins was a smart man who knew
what he was talking about? Is that why we are doing this diet? Is that why
we have this egroup? Or did we feel we were running out of options..
because of our health or because our self esteem or because our depressions
and utter despair that we made a choice for OURSELVES to change? Atkins may
be an easier diet than most and may or may not be more successful (future
tests will tell) but these changes we have had to make are NOT easy for any
one of us. This support group helps make it just a tad bit easier and
perhaps even a little more fun at times. I come to this group religiously
every day and read the messages. I post quite a few too… most times very
supportive and helpful. This egroup has helped me to stay my course and not
give up or give in. It has helped me to have more strength in knowing I am
doing what I need to do, and ignoring the naysayers who think that Atkins is
a bunch of crap. And I’ll bet dollars to donuts that I’m not the only one!
If I believed in god, and attended church, and was confronted by someone who
would mock me for my choice in gods and demand that I prove to them that my
god exists and prove that the bible was written by knowledgeable people
instead of those ’so-called-priests’… would I be required to prove that
god exists? If I’m not expected to do so in my own church, then why should
I be required to prove that Atkins works in my own support group? If you
want to believe my god doesn’t exist, then get the hell out of my church and
leave me to the reasons I am here. If you don’t believe Atkins works, get
the hell out of the group and stop demanding proof from the members. To
me.. its as simple as that. If you come here with legitimate questions and
a genuine interest to learn then you’ll find all the support you can ever
ask for… but don’t come in here and belittle our beliefs and demand we
prove to you that it works.
Anyway, I hope that if I confused anyone out there with my initial
response… I hope you now have a clearer understanding for why I reacted as
strongly as I did. I know I’m not the only one that was offended.. and I
also know I’m not the only one here that feeling tired of having to defend
or choose and prove anything to anyone else. I did this diet for ME because
I was just tired of being overweight, tired of looking and feeling like
shit, tired of hating how I looked in the mirror, and worried about my
health. I did not set out on this diet to prove to anyone that Atkins can
work… if it works for me and I reach my goals, then that’s enough for me.
Thanks for hearing me out!

The obvious question is what could be wrong about eating this way. The
obvious answer is nothing — and it tastes good and you can stay on it for a
lifetime.
I went out to dinner last night with some friends. I started with an order
of carpacio with parm cheese and for a main course I had a steak with
sautéed broccoli rabe with garlic. I had decaff coffee with heavy cream
afterwards — and this is a diet?
September 29th, 2004 at 9:39 am
I am sorry Donald … the part about the keto stix was not, meant for you … I
I just got really irritated about the demand for proof. It was not meant
guess I was a bit miffed about the gf wanting proof that we were losing fat . I
mean, this woe has been around in its current form with very small changes for
about 30 years … but it has been around in a raw form for MUCH longer than
that .
and yep my bmi is pretty low … I eat this way now mostly b/c I just plain feel
better. I have lost all of my weight. I am basically on this board b/c hubby is
on induction … and I do the cooking for him. also since induction can be so
difficult, induction people tend to get more excited about new Atkins friendly
products that come out on the market. and I am always on the lookout for new
stuff.
EXAMPLE: TGI Fridays just announced an Atkins friendly menu …. * La Brada has
just come out with a really rich ice cream … 4g I think.
So technically maybe I don’t belong , but I hang out for the benefits .

Hey David and/or Donald (which is it??)
Let me know about the BMI. If others are getting more consistent results,
I’ll break down and buy a new scale. Perhaps I just got a low-carb-lemon.
Even today… weight loss exactly the same… BMI jumped up 1.2% in one day.
Making no sense on a ‘daily basis’.
Thanks

Hello Barbara, and thanks for your reply
You are right about inches. While I’m still ignorant to fully understand
I know ohhhhhhh so well the old adage “a watched pot never boils” and
Thanks!
the reasons why you can lose inches and not show anything positive (or
negative) on a scale is a foreign concept to me. I just showered and
dressed. I grabbed the wrong jeans… a pair I could not wear 4 weeks
ago… much to my surprise, I am wearing them today without the tight
constrictions of a few weeks back. I guess my scale just needs to catch up
to the rest of me
jumping on that scale every day fits that adage. Patience… Patience…
Patience… (not my strong suit but I’ll learn it).
Well I’m about to go out and model these ‘once unwearable jeans’ about the
cold city streets of NYC and get my (smaller) butt to the bank before it
closes on me

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
Ohmigod People! I think I’ve developed a new addiction… I can’t pass by a
GNC without going in and spending a fortune. UGH. hehehehehe
I stopped in because… well… wanted to pick up some Calcium supplements
to add to my daily vitamin supplements regime, and walked out $140.00 poorer
(even though the salesperson was so nice and gave me my 20% discount even
though that was for last week not this week), 4 shopping bags heavier, and 2
Free tshirts richer.
I picked up some O’So Lo - low carb rolls (3.0 net gram Carbs each), Various
Atkins Advantage muffin/bread mixes (with 2 net grams Carbs each), some
powdered and premixed Atkins Shakes in vanilla and chocolate (meal
replacements since I am soooooooo bad when it comes to eating lunch), some
of the Atkins ‘colon care’ kits, Atkins condements (Ketchup, BBQ Sauce,
Steak Sauce), and three bags of these LowCarb SUCCESS Brand instant hot
cereals (butter pecan, vanilla almond and strawberries and cream flavored)
with 2 net grams Carbs per serving.
Since we’ve talked about Flaxseeds lately, when I saw these cereals what
caught my eye was they are made from Wheat Bran, Flax Seed Meal, Soy Protein
Isolate (non GMO), Almonds Flavorings and Salt. 12G Carbs with 10G Dietary
Fiber, 7G Fat and 13G Protein.
Has anyone tried these hot cereals? Any good? I need a break from eggs and
bacon (or sausage) and chicken salad and egg salad for breakfast meals…
and with winter here in NYC… a nice hot bowl of cereal makes ya feel
good-feel good!
For anyone else out there who has become (or is afraid of becoming) a GNC
Addict, perhaps we should form a small support group!!! Ugh… I must have
spent about $400.00 in the last 5 and 1/2 weeks at GNC on Atkins products
and Vitamin Supplements (which I now have a stock that will last me 1/2 a
year since I always buy them big-ol-bottles whenever I can).
Hello, my name is John, and Im a GNC Junkie!

I wanna say THANKS to those who have already added their information into
the new database. Wow… ! Only 6 entries so far, but very encouraging
ones at that!
Congrats to Jen P, whoever you are, for your loss of 73Lbs since 11/2002!
WOO HOO!
Hello to Helen F… you and I started Atkins on the same exact day (which
was also my 40th birthday!). We are neck and neck (though you lost 1 more
lb than me! congrats!!!).
Way to go Louise!! I knew you’d do it!!! I expected to see you add your
record! I just edited your record to reformat the date to be consistent
with everyone elses, and to change your weight gain into a weight loss with
a magical ‘-’ sign… Do you feel lighter now since I did this? hehehehehe
And of course, thanks and Congrats to Barbara (43lbs), Ed (20lbs), Liz
(40lbs), Louise (6lbs) and Raul (weight loss not recorded yet).
To date: 7 recorded weights with losses totalling 207lbs!!!!! I can feel
the planet spinning a little bit easier already!!!!

Hiya Leslie!
all those pills and water making me feel
Take care
Too bad there are no Walmarts near me. I have a couple of GNC’s in the
area, but I do admit they seem pricey. I should compare prices paid in GNC
against what I can find on the web and have shipped to see what would be
more cost effective.
For what its worth, I’m feeling like a junkie now in the morning and at
night… With vitamins and supplements and herbs and such I’m taking like 9
pills with breakfast and 7 pills with dinner… goodness! I’m surprised
theres room for food after all those! Maybe thats whats REALLY controlling
my appetitie at those times
full before I even take that first bite of my meal!
I’m anxious to try the hot cerials because I am really feeling ‘blah’ over
eggs. Plus I want to up my daily fiber anyway from natural sources. Winter
in NYC with snow on the ground, it’ll feel good to have a nice hot bowl of
cereal just like Mom used to make when we were kids!

If anyone on this egroup is from NYC and uses FreshDirect.com for your
groceries (sooooooooo worth it)… Next time you are online ordering food,
make sure to request specifically to the company that they start carrying
more low-carb and ATKINS brands. I saw this week they started to carry
ZonePerfect… the more of us who ask, the better the chances are they will
start to carry these at a more reasonable price we are seeing at GNC and
other stores.

Talk to you soon
I will try the cereals for breakfast over the next few days and let you

The O’So Lo rolls I liked. I freeze them as soon as I get them, then heat
one up at 350 for 12 minutes, some butter melting on it and eat that with my
dinner. It’s the small comforts that make a huge difference. I had 2 last
week, will allow myself 2 this week, keeping the rest frozen for weeks to
come.

John
I have requested several times now that FreshDirect.com start carrying Diet
Rite brand soda’s as well as Atkins products. Time will tell if they listen
and pointed out there must be a decent sized market in NYC if they tapped
into it by offering them online. They must have felt a decline in
bread/pasta products… why not regain that market back by carrying what
people are using as replacements
