Chinese food question
I was bad today for the first time in almost three weeks on
Induction, so let me know just how bad I was…
I went to a Chinese Buffet today. I was good in a the way that I
steered clear of ALL noodles and rice dishes, BUT I had a cup of Hot
& Sour soup, 1/2 Veggie Egg Foo Young patty, some Chicken with
Mushrooms in sauce, some Beef with Mixed Veggies in Sauce, and two
Terriaki Chicken strips.
I can only imagine the sauces were horrible, and I hope they don’t
knock me out of ketosis.
What chinese type foods are the least harmful to eat?

I was really hoping someone knew… I have been wondering too. Sorry
I can’t help you Chris.
I have been thinking about this, because when DIL and I go to the
city, she always wants to eat at the big Chinese buffet. I knew I
could avoid the rice, noodles, eggrolls, breaded pork and chicken,
wontons (sigh…), but really suspected that the sauces in the meat
and veggie dishes might have a lot of sugar.
I guess if no one knows, we could just look up the recipes in an
online cookbook, and see if the sauces normally contain sugar.
And, well… our buffet always has green salad, although I’d hate to
spend $7 on that alone. ;/

me too, we go there lots and I try to avoid the pastas and things I know
are bad but often wonder about the sauces. Kathy

Thanks, Rebecca! I’m not sure our buffet has all of those items, and

I am allergic to shrimp, but I can live this list. Next time, I’ll
at least hae the steamed tofu with veggies, egg drop soup, beef with
mushrooms, steamed fish (blah!)… and I think that’s all that I
have seen there from your list. And of course a big green salad.

I have worked at 2 Chinese restaurants over the years and I am currently working
in one now. I can tell you unless ordered otherwise, they add sugar to 99% of
the foods. If it doesn’t have sugar, it has cornstarch. In most cases the
dishes have both. Egg drop soup has very little sugar, but it has lots of
cornstarch. Same with hot & sour soup. Won ton broth has no cornstarch, it has
sugar, but very little. In eating at restaurants you can order no sugar no
cornstarch on pretty much anything and it doesn’t taste too bad, but you do have
to ask. In regards to buffet type eating, I’d say it would be for people done
with induction. Egg foo yung without the gravy sauce is okay , steamed fish and
prawns of course. Sometimes it can be bland and I can’t use tarter or cocktail
sauce, so I mix wasabi with soy sauce use it as a dip. I hit the sushi rolls
and just eat the toppings, the beef sticks in the one I go to are okay they’re
marinated with lemongrass and soy sauce, but beware because some places use a
teriyaki marinade. I could eat my $9 just on the crab legs dipped in butter and
the steamed clams. The one I go to also has baked mussels on the half shell
topped with cheese. There is the salad bar too. If you don’t like seafood it’d
probably be hard because most meats are in some kind of stirfry with a sauce
that has sugar. I guess it just depends on what type of menu the buffet has.
My friend goes to the same one I go to but every day and she so far has lost 25
pounds in 5 weeks. I can’t afford to do that but it shows you can at those
places as long as you’re careful. Hope this helps, Chelebell

I live in Maui.
I was wondering if there is anyone else from Maui here? The low
carb products available at Alive and Well are expensive and maybe we
can do some kind of co-op to order them in larger quantities online
to reduce the shipping costs?
Just a thought.
