Doctor’s Orders - IMPORTANT

I think it’s very important right now to emphasize that while our
dr’s don’t know everything and we need to take responsibility for
our own health, they do know more about many things than we do.
If you are seeing a dr. for chronic health problems, etc., please
understand that we are not telling you not to follow your dr’s
orders. My mom is a Type 2 diabetic with Type 1 tendencies and is
taking blood thinners and heart meds to control tachycardia. She
also just quit smoking about a year and a half ago (can i get a
hallelujah?), and has chronic respiratory problems, although that
has improved greatly!
She asked her dr. about going on the Atkins diet and he told her he
didn’t think it would be a good idea. I think he was being very
wise. She needs to stay on a diabetic diet, which requires a certain
amount of carbs. Yes, it may help her sugar to go on Atkins, but
since she has some Type 1 tend. she will always be on meds, and it
is important that she get her carbs.
He did not, however, criticize the diet, just said it wouldn’t be
good for her.
My dr. is all for it for me because I am hypoglycemic and a low
carb, high protein diet is the only real treatment for it. (BTW, it
is working wonderfully!) But there could be a good reason for a
doctor to tell a patient that it isn’t a good idea.
If you trust your dr. (and that’s what this is really all about),
you should listen to him or her and take the meds that are
prescribed. If you are concerned about something, talk to them and
voice your concerns. A good dr. will take the time to listen and
explain his or her decision to prescribe or order what they have.
The dr. that we “dumped” was not a good dr. He didn’t listen, told
us that he knew what he was doing and we shouldn’t question it, and
was making some very big mistakes with our health/medicine,
including finding meds that worked really well for my husband and
then changing them just to keep him coming back.
Not agreeing with your diet doesn’t necessarily make your dr. a bad
one. If the blood tests are looking better than they used to and
your overall health is improving, eventually a good dr. will see the
benefit anyway.
