Please, everyone chime in on this subject
As the author of “Grateful, but furious”, I decided I would do some sleuthing
around among people I know that either are or have been on Atkins in the past.
I have been at a plateau of losing only 11-13 pounds after having been on Atkins
since Dec. 28. I gain and lose the same 2 pounds over and over. Here is what I
found to be the common denominator among the ones I talked to:
EXERCISE.
Now… that being said, I’m not saying I don’t exercise at all. I do. I use a
treadmill for 30-40 minutes. Just not every day. Not on a consistant and never
failing way. I don’t cheat on the diet. So this HAS TO BE IT. I can’t seem to
stay in ketosis anymore, except for the one day last week I got to walk on the
treadmill!
My daughter in law’s sister was on Atkins at one time. She told her it was
exercise. My daughter’s high school principal told me he’d lost (but now gained
back) 60 lbs. on Atkins… and it just won’t work well w/o the exercise. The
coach I have been rivaling at the high school since December…asked me if I was
exercising.
SOOOOOOO…….. here is the question of the day:
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE LOSING… and have passed the one-two month
period….what kind of exercise are you doing, and for how long?
This would really encourage me to keep on. I explained to friends at lunch
today, that the diet is really liveable for me… so it’s not that I really want
to chuck it. But….dang it…. I want the results that everyone else around me
seems to get!
I have a treadmill, which I prefer to use (I have my own mix of the Backstreet
Boys going from slow to fast to slow songs for rythm). I’m 45, married, I work
outside the home, am the cheerleader sponsor for my 16 y/o’s squad, in the
church praise band, a new granny to my 25 y/o married son’s 10 month old, and
just married off my 22 y/o college graduate daughter last month, attend every
basketball and track event my 16 y/o participates in, I garden, and lastly……
there’s always the housework! So… the treadmill is truly the only thing I
would have time for.
I’d appreciate any input from everyone on the exercise subject.

Terry,
I have been on Atkins for 7 weeks now. I lost 15lb in the 1st 3
weeks and then stopped loosing. I did, though, loose some inches.
Yesterday am, I lost 2 more lbs, but then went to a Tastefully
Simple party and caved! This morning, I have those 2lbs back -
ugh!!!
I do exercise some. I go to the gym 3x a week and walk on the
treadmill. I used the stepper machine for the first time on
Saturday, so I’ll probably start using that on a regular basis too.
I think the exercise is important for me (not to mention that we
paid for a whole year membership at the Y and I AM NOT wasting that
$).
It is so frustrating seeing others loose weight so quickly but don’t
give up!

I started Atkins on Jan 05/04 and joined Curves on March 15/04. I
think
it has made a huge difference in my shape. (I can see some definition
in my
arms!!) In one month at Curves, I lost 6 pounds and 13 inches!!! I
go
three times a week for 30 minutes. And that is all I have been
doing. In
total I have lost 28 pounds. Now that the weather has warmed up I
will be
walking too, and when the outdoor pool opens, I will be going to water
aerobics (great on your joints, if you are less mobile). I plan on
being
very close to my 50 pound weight loss goal by July 1.
In short, get exercising!!!

Hi Terry
I started Atkins on Feb 2nd, and lost 14 pounds the first 2 weeks
with no exercise. I maintained that weight for 3 weeks, and finally
came to the conclusion that 14 pounds was all I was going to lose
without incorporating exercise into my life. I have lost 2 pounds
every week since I bought my new treadmill. I run 3 times a week, for
1 mile. I also do 20 crunches after I run.
So, for me the only way to keep the pounds coming off is to run on my
treadmill. I honestly feel that without it I would still be stuck at
175, but i’m now currently at 165 instead!
Different things work for different people. It could be that you’re
working out too hard and developing muscle faster than you can lose
weight. Or since your busy schedule it could be that you need to add
1 more days workout to your schedule. I also have an extremely busy
life, and the only time I have to work out is at 9:30pm in the
evening. Good luck with your weight loss, we all hit plateaus, you
just have to find a way your body can get past them.
