Glucose

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

Good morning all. I started induction at the begining of January, &
have lost 12 lbs so far. At that time my Glucose & cholesterol
levels were above normal but not alarmingly high. I’ve been using
Atkins with my Dr.s approval. Friday, when my latest bloodwork came
back, we were shocked to find that both my glucose & cholesterol were
through the roof! I have eaten very few carbs. 3 - 4 salads & maybe
1/2 lb. cauliflower & a small amount of spinach a week. All else is
meat, eggs, & cheese (although not much cheese). My only cheat was a
bowl of pasta about a week before the blood was drawn. I do drink
quite a bit Fruit-2-0 flavored water & also a flavored seltzer (can’t
think of the name) which are both sweetened with Splenda. Is it
possible that the Splenda has caused this rise in glucose? I
followed Carb Addicts a few years ago, & they said that if the food
tastes sweet the body releases insulin, even if it’s artificial
sweetener. Has anyone had this happen? Does anyone have any ideas
on getting glucose down? Dr. say if it’s not down by June, i go on
insulin. I’m a 55 yo woman & need to loose 100 lbs. Help!

Is there a rule that we must use splenda? I really dont like the taste it
leaves in my mouth after I eat or drink something with splenda in it. I’d
like to use nutra sweet or equal instead, but I’m not sure. Any advise?

Angel,
The sticks will not realistically be purple (If they are, you are
likely dehydrated). Aim for pink, the darker the pink the better.
Dont stress that they arent purple. Any pink means that you are in
ketosis and is a start.
the strips have been completely ‘neutral’…there has been no color to the
strips at all…so obviously i’m not in ketosis at all??

Stay OFF Atkins Bars they are not allowed during induction. What salad
dressing
are you using? Are you using steak sauce with your steak?
I use NO salad dressing at all..and NO steak sauce whatsoever…i am going to
eliminate the bars totally..i was not aware that they were not allowed..since
when i went to the Atkins site it indicated that it was ok in stage 1
I have read the book..several times..as far as i know i am following it as i
should be..
I also forgot to mention that i’ve been using the Atkins breakfast
shakes..which the Atkins site ALSO said was appropriate for induction one
will eliminate those altogether too!!
Thanks John for your advice!!

For a sweet treat, try sugar free jello with real whipping cream on
top.
And, excercise will help a lot too along with lots of water.
Keep up posted!
I went yesterday to buy sugar free jello and found that it was made with
aspartame…i was under the impression that would could not have that?? I’d love
to have that as i do love jello…i drink the lots of water..but like i told
Patricia..i cannot exercise right now as i have had knee surgery a week ago…I
have decided to cut ALL those bars out period..and just stick to the other
foods i’ve been eating..is there any other “treats” that i can have that you
know of?? Thank you SO much for responding!!

especially not enough fat.
what would u suggest to add fat?? Keeping in mind..i cannot eat any type of
fish whatsoever..i mainly stick to chicken and steak
From what I read on your reply you are not eating enough
Well i am following what i can eat to stay under the 20 gms of Carbs..i
thought i was doing good..
And i am definetly thinking of cutting out the bars..i have done this diet
before a few years ago..and had NO problems losing..yet i didnt have those bars
back then..so the bars are being cut out
And lastly..right now i cannot exercise..i just had knee surgery last
Friday..so its kinda hard to do right now..but once i am back on my feet i will
for
sure exercise..but it will only be like walking..so as not to reinjure my knee..
Thank you for takin the time to answer me..it means alot..and any other
advice you have is greatly appreciated!!
