Trader Joe’s Grocery

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

HI…don’t know how many of you have a TJ’s close, but I was checking their
website and they have a list of their low carb items.
http://www.traderjoes.com/products/brochures/locarb.asp?ECID=list_track
I’ve shopped their quite a bit pre-induction so have’t tried these items but
will likely go there this week or next and will keep you posted. A friend of
mine told me they have the best prices of the Atkins bars anywhere he’s found.
Thanks for the continued encourgagement and good advice!

induction flour substitute

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

Hi. I bought some “Thick it Up” from GNC. It is cheaper than “Thick -n- Thin”
which I *think* is by Atkins. Both are a combination of guar gum and xanthan
gum, which are some of those words that you never knew what the heck they were
on the labels of your pre-Atkins processed food. Well, they are naturally
occurring plant based substances that work as thickeners. I have only tried
mine once, but it worked VERY well. Do be careful because a little goes a LONG
way. I made gravy to go over a pork roast and 3 tsp for the whole crockpot full
of juices was too much. We still ate it, and it was yummy, but would have been
better with only 1 or 2 tsp. If you are doing strict Atkins induction, this
thickener is not on “the list”. But I suspect if you searched the Atkins recipe
site there would be some recipes there that are marked okay for induction that
contain their thickener. I have never heard anyone say this caused them to
stall.
Good luck!
Deborah
does anyone know what I can use on induction for a thickener?
Thanks in advance
Kim

I jumped a hurdle!!

Yesterday I went to my uncles wedding… I’m on induction still, so it was a
challenge. Before I got there I thought I was safe, because half my family is
on Atkins (3 of which were sitting at my table), but there were challenges. I
brought an advantage bar with me, and ate it before the ceremony, which helped a
lot. They had fruit, cheese, and crackers before the ceremony, and I went
straight to the cheese. Then they sent soup out, and I only ate the broth.
(Although being urged the entire time to “take the day off”). I ate my salad
(minus tomatoes and carrots), and my prime rib and asparagus (passed on yummy
looking mashed potatoes and rolls). I finished every last bite of my prime rib
(was awesome!!!) and didn’t have room for those carb filled goodies anyway. By
the time the wedding cake came out, I was busy dancing, and didn’t even notice.
The best part was this morning. I had picked up a cute little strapless dress,
made of linen, which held in my “pouch” (belly), and today… I was told how
everyone was saying how great I looked. It’s really hard for me to accept, but
I feel like I’m getting somewhere. (as a matter of fact, my grandfather saw me
coming down the stairs, and whistled at my legs~he thought I was my 20 year old
cousin Megan. Not bad for a mother of 4!)

something that tasted really good

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

I bought the carb options teriyaki blend last week, and gave it a whirl. I
marinated steak tips in it for about a day and a half, and they were the best
tips ever!!! I’m pretty sure it was 1 per serving… Anyway, worth the try!

I wanted to say welcome and tell you what a great start you all seem to have
going. Even if your not losing yet, you will. Watch those tempting ticks of the
trade like the icecream and diet soda etc. It is difficult to give it all up but
I have found that the silliest things can cause a stall. You’ll get the hang of
it.
Come here with questions or look in the archives if you need an answer right
away. The archives are a great source of information.
Oh, and measure yourselves. I wish I had. I had stalled for about a month but
just friday realized that I was about to loose my pants and all I was doing was
standing there rocking the baby… I know I’m losing inches even if it isn’t
comming off on the scale. I have learned this is common. So don’t fret.
Good luck.

Stacy[ atkinsdietinduction ] intro and coffee question

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Stacy,
My husband didn’t really need to try Atkins but my daughter did…….so
after seeing my weight loss she almost jumped at the chance to get involved too.
To date she has lost approx. 15 lbs but the biggest difference is in her
clothes. It looks like she has lost so much more. Granted she doesn’t need to
lose the weight that I do but, I am happy it is working for her. My husband has
lost 11 lbs too simply because we still all eat our evening meal together. I
look at it like this , if carbs are not good for over wieght people, I am sure
they can’t be good for regular weight people either, so I am not forcing
anyone to do anything thats not good for them anyways. Did that make sense? LOL
Patty

Thank you for the response!

Everyone is just so helpful, I appreciate having a hand (or more :))
that I can reach out to when I’m uncertain about some things.
I am going to try the Atkin’s Induction once more before my
appointment comes up. I’ve tried to limit my sugar intake so maybe
now I won’t feel so crippled this time.
Wish me luck! :))
